6 Hours In Bern: Itinerary

The Old Town
The Old Town is a must-visit for backpackers. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983, it features narrow streets, cobblestones, and colorful facades typical of many Old Towns.

Zytglogge (The Clock Tower)
This iconic 13th-century clock tower is located in the Old Town and is a must-see. Dating back to the 1530s, it’s one of Switzerland’s oldest clocks. You can climb the tower for panoramic views of the city. The clock operates through complex mechanisms and chimes every hour. Tours are available to see it in action, but be sure to book in advance as spots are limited.

Zentrum Paul Klee Museum
On the outskirts of Bern, you’ll find the fascinating Zentrum Paul Klee Museum, housed in a striking early 20th-century building. Designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano and opened in 2005, it showcases the works of the artist Paul Klee, who began sketching as a child.
Rosengarten (Rose Garden)
Once a cemetery, the Rose Garden has transformed into a beautiful communal space filled with roses and irises since 1913. It offers stunning views of Bern’s Old Town and is a great spot to enjoy a meal or a picnic. The path leading up to the garden takes about 4-6 minutes to walk, and the effort is rewarded with breathtaking scenery.

Bern Münster Cathedral
The Bern Münster, built in the 1420s, was intended to be the tallest cathedral in the 15th century. Its spire reaches over 100 meters, making it an iconic landmark. The cathedral is open to the public, showcasing beautiful stained glass windows and Gothic sculptures, including the Last Judgment carving. Climbing the over 300 steps to the tower costs around 4 euros, but entry to the church area is free.
The Münster Platform
This pathway leads to the Bern Münster Cathedral, providing lovely views along the Aare River and the lower town.

Aare River
The Aare River is renowned for its striking turquoise hue and remarkable cleanliness, making it a popular spot for locals to enjoy swimming. Its crystal-clear waters invite both residents and visitors to experience the refreshing beauty of this natural gem. Whether you’re looking to take a dip or simply admire the picturesque scenery, the Aare River offers a vibrant, inviting atmosphere that embodies the charm of Bern.
